Update to 2009 GM Mock draft no.1

Written by Curt Popejoy on 10/05/2009

The first part of September, I posted an article, where I was going to be the GM of a fictional franchise, and make my picks. I also said at each quarter of the season I would update my players. Here’s my first update at the 4 week mark.

First Round - Brian Orakpo DE Texas  Washington Redskins
Orakpo has been entrenched as a starter in Washington since week one, moving all over the field between the defensive line and linebackers. His versatility has really impressed me. In 4 games he’s had 13 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 pass defended. Orakpo’s ability to play all over the field is one of the reasons I liked him coming out so much. I think once they are able to put Orakpo into a more steady routine, he’ll be even more effective.
Second Round - Max Unger C Oregon Seattle Seahawks
Unger is the starting right guard for the Seattle Seahawks, and although he’s showing some growing pains he’s really coming along nicely in making the transition. His ability to be versatile is part of why he ended up going so high. I love him as a guard and he could end up playing at a high level for a long time.
Third Round - Roy Miller DT Texas Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Miller has been unable to crack the starting lineup in Tampa as of yet, but he’s shown to be a really valuable member of the defensive line rotation. 11 tackles and a sack as a part time player is nice development for him. I expect to see Miller as a starter before the year is out, but for now, I’m very happy with where he is as a player.
Fourth Round - Shawn Nelson TE Southern Miss Buffalo Bills
Nelson has started all 3 games for Buffalo at TE, but as of yet hasn’t meshed with Trent Edwards. I have only seen one Bills game, and in that one, he saw lots of reps but did get targeted at all in the passing game. Nelson is a great receiver and a solid blocker, so I expect him to improve as the year goes on.
Fifth Round - Fenuki Tupou OT Oregon Philadelphia Eagles
Tupou went on injured reserve and will not play this season after suffering a knee injury.
Sixth Round - James Davis RB Clemson Cleveland Browns
After a strong preseason and winning a backup role, Davis went on IR last week after suffering a season ending shoulder injury.
Seventh Round - Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati Dallas Cowboys
Mickens is currently on the Cowboys practice squad, mainly because the Cowboys have chosen to only keep 4 Cbs on the active roster. I fully expect to see Mickens on the active roster at some point.
UDFA - Domonique Johnson CB Jackson State Denver Broncos
Johnson was signed as a project player, and so far has not been activated by the Broncos. The Broncos are really solid in the secondary so I am not sure if Johnson is going to get much of a chance to play this year, barring injuries.
UDFA - Darry Beckwith LB LSU San Diego Chargers
Beckwith is another practice squad player, but with the Chargers but with the problems they are having on defense, I won’t be shocked if he’s not on the active roster in the next few weeks.
UDFA - Chris Baker DT Hampton Denver Broncos
The Broncos talk like they really like Hampton but I do not believe that he’s been active for any games this year. I think he’ll end up a nice 3-4 end, but he’s still a work in progress.
UDFA - Will Ta'ufo'ou FB California Chicago Bears
Ta’ufo’ou is sitting on the Bears practice squad after having a nice preseason. Not sure what his future is with the team.
UDFA - Quan Cosby WR Texas Cincinnati Bengals
Cosby has earned his place with the Bengals by becoming a pretty impressive kick returner. As an UDFA, you can’t ask for a whole lot more this early in his career.

All in all, I am very happy with my draft. Tupou and Davis were both on track to be serious contributors to their team’s offenses prior to their injuries. Nelson, Unger, and Orakpo are already starters, and Miller is very close. I’ll update things again at mid-season to see if my picks are still improving.
