Matchups of the week
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o against Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell-We should all be rooting for Te'o against Michigan State as he's playing with a heavy heart after losing his grandmother and girlfriend this week, but all that aside, Bell is a big bruising workhorse of a back who has burst on the scene and I expect he and Te'o to have some pretty epic collisions in this game. I personally love watching both guys play and expect big plays by each in this game.
Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel against SMU defensive end Margus Hunt-Joeckel is one of the top left tackles in the country and Hunt is maybe the most freakish physical specimen in college football. Margus has made his name by being the best punt/kick blocker in the history of college football, but he's improving as a pass rusher as a 3-4 defensive end, and he's going to get tested by the big, strong and athletic Joeckel.
Stanford linebacker Chase Thomas against USC running back Silas Redd-Thomas is off to a fast start and has the look of a high draft pick in 2013, and Redd has found a new home as part of the most explosive offensive not in Oregon. Thomas will be playing chase with Redd and this game could really showcase his ability to diagnose a play and get to the football in a hurry. Redd is a dynamic player who's very good at one on one, so he will be tested here.
Stanford DB’s Usua Amanam and Ed Reynolds against USC wide outs Marquis Lee and Robert Woods- Amanam and Reynolds are off to fast starts and big games here could really put their names out there. But alas, Lee and Woods are the best wide out tandem in the country(with Tennessee a close 2nd), and so while I am optimistic for them, I have a funny feeling the Trojan tandem is going to get the best of this one.
Ole Miss offensive lineman Terrell Brown against all furniture-I kid, but if you look around Youtube, you can find the video of the massive tackle crushing a folding chair by simply sitting on it. Brown isn't a particularly interesting draft prospect, but I recommend checking him out(he starts as a tight end in field goal/exp coverage), if for no other reason than it's rare to see a man 6'10" and 385lbs in a football uniform at all.
The North Texas running game against Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown-The Mean Green are off to a great start this season and they have the the two headed rushing attack of Brandin Byrd and Antoinne Jimmerson to thank for it. They are each averaging over 80 yards per game, giving North Texas fresh legs all game long. And they will need it, because Brown is a head hunter at linebacker and comes at a running back like a heat seeking missile.
Arkansas running backs Knile Davis and Dennis Johnson against the Alabama defense-The Razorbacks are coming off one of the worst losses in college football recent history. And so what is your prize? The defending national champions come to town to beat you to a pulp. Oh and your starting quarterback probably isn't playing. Davis is still not back to full strength, and Johnson is talented but underused. If the Razorbacks want to have any shot in this game, these 2 must be the highlight of the offense. But with the Crimson Tide defense swarming the football that's easier said than done.
Arkansas quarterback/wide receiver Brandon Mitchell against Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner-Mitchell has been a shining star for a depleted Arkansas receiving corp, but Milliner might just be the best all around cornerback in the nation. If the Razorbacks have a hope of winning, Mitchell is going to have to play out of his mind against the physical and smart Milliner.
Florida safetys Matt Elam and Josh Evans against Tennessee wide receivers Justin Hunter and Cordarelle Patterson-The Gators might have the best safety tandem in the nation in Elam and Evans. They are both excellent football players and going against wide outs like Hunter and Patterson, their help on those guys, keeping them from getting deep on the Floirda corners might be Florida's only hope of winning this game. Hunter and Patterson are looking pretty unstoppable and quarterback Tyler Bray is finding ways to get them the football.
