Scouting Snapshots-Sam Montgomery
Written by Curt Popejoy on 08/19/2012
These are my preseason scouting reports. They are meant to just lay a foundation for where these players are going into the 2012 College Football season. Obviously when I do final scouting reports on these players after the season, things will change. No guarantees they will change for the better, and I do my best to be objective and pragmatic. You all may take that as being negative, but if I like a guy I say so, and if I don't, you'll hear that too.

Sam Montgomery, DE/OLB LSU
Height-6'3"
Weight-242lbs
Positives
-Incredibly productive -High level of competition -Freakish natural athlete -Motor that never stops -Lots of potential for growth(in his game) -Long frame and arms
Negatives
-Raw -Might be maxed out physically(weight) -Sloppy in his technique at times -Needs to improve the technical parts of his game -Untested dropping into coverage -Must get stronger
2012 Outlook
I have Montgomery ranked really high on my big board, mainly because I think he's going to really come on strong. I've seen him listed as the top defensive player in the draft, but he's much too far from a finished product for a lofty spot like that. While he's explosive, his lack of finesse in his technique makes him appear slower than he is, and I want to see that improved. And something I can't see this year but I wonder about is can Montgomery play at 250 or is he capped out? Could effect him being a situational rusher or an every down player.
