Wednesday’s South practice had the players working mostly in technique drills, before their full scrimmage.
1-on-1 OL/DL – The tide turned a bit to the DL, playing with more intensity and smarter to win some of the battles,
Tim Crowder, Tank Tyler and Ryan McBean being examples of guys that showed more than their previous day's work.
For my money, Ray McDonald has helped himself some, Quentin Moses
not so much. Most of the OL did little today to impress. Ryan
Kalil, probably helping himself a bit, has edged Dustin Fry. Joe Staley
and Tony Ugoh appear to be the only tackles not destined to spend
time at guard from this squad, with Aaron Sears and Justin Blalock
playing well. Mansfield Wrotto and Tim Duckworth didn't
distinguish themselves.
11-on-11
Kenny Irons continues to run hard, hitting the hole with quickness, but doesn’t seem to have top speed to the outside, which with his size might limit him.
Lorenzo Booker dropped a couple of screen, but he clearly has that speed to the outside, and can play in that 3rd down/change of pace role.
Chansi Stuckey put himself out front as the WR to help himself the most from the South squad. He made the most of his reps with nice catches. Stuckey particularly showed nice speed after the catch, on screens especially.
Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chris Davis have been solid, with the rest of the group,
Dwayne Bowe and Dallas Baker particularly, generally unimpressive.
Joe Newton made a difficult catch and rang Michael Griffin's bell, running over him, after the catch. For what Newton might lack in athleticism and speed, he’s shown great hands all week.
The South OL provided a solid pocket in 11-on-11 drill, but did particularly well in run blocking.
Tony Ugoh and Joe Staley at LT created space for plays. Lorenzo Booker showed nice cut back ability, finding one of those gaping holes.
The South QBs just don’t measure up. Kevin Kolb has shown a bit more potential in this practice, at times throwing passes that have been as impressive as anyone, but the consistency isn’t there.
Jordan Palmer, like the Palko on the North, has struggled with accuracy and timing and just hasn’t made enough great throws.
Joe Staley, Tony
Ugoh, Ryan Kalil, Chansi Stuckey, Ray McDonald, and Tank Tyler.
Jordan Palmer,
Dwayne Bowe, Dustin Fry, Tim Duckworth, Quentin Moses, and Kevin
Payne.
