Players to Watch in 2005

June 18, 2005

Player/School

Bio

QB ― Josh Betts, Miami (OH)

Last year, with Big Ben getting all the pub in the NFL, Betts got lost.  This year, the spotlight is all his, and a chance to make a lot of money.

6' 3"/225 lbs.

[official bio]

RB ― Brian Calhoun, Wisconsin

Former Colorado Buffalo, who will love running behind that big Wisconsin OL.  He's a far more versatile player than Davis was.

5' 10"/194 lbs.

[official bio]

RB Andre Hall, South Florida

Welcome to the Big East, Andre.  The change of scenery is just what this undiscovered star needs.

5' 10"/205 lbs.

WR Steve Breaston, Michigan

Avant will steal most of the pre-season pub, but this kid can do it all, especially in the return game.  If he's
healthy, he's a major weapon.

6' 1"/174 lbs.

[official bio]

WR Eric Deslauriers, Eastern Michigan

A former quarterback, who's found his spot at wide out.

6' 4"/207 lbs.

TE Andrew Clarke, Toledo

This kid was poised to be the best TE in the country last year, before a very early season ending injury.

6' 4"/249 lbs.

[official bio]

OT Daryn Colledge, Boise State

A total physical freak, who's a top 5 pick if he's playing in at Michigan.

6' 5"/298 lbs.

[official bio]

OG Mark Setterstrom, Minnesota

He's got to get bigger, but rumor is, he's up to around 3 bills, which keeps him quick and athletic enough to pull, but strong enough to maintain pass protection and straight ahead run blocking.

6' 3"/295 lbs.

[official bio]

C Brian Head, Stanford

Get mean, Brian, get mean.  He's such a smart player, and great technician, but he's got to show more fire and consistency.

6' "/295 lbs.

[official bio]

OGNick Cole, New Mexico State

A monster inside, he's got to show he can get it done on a week to week basis, and get quicker.  He may need to drop some weight for the next level, but he's still one to watch.

OT Travis Leffew, Louisville

I went on record with Michael Roos last summer, and Leffew is my guy for this year.

6' 4"/301 lbs.

[official bio]

DE James Wyche, Syracuse

A very raw athlete, and gets by essentially on his natural physical advantage, particularly in the speed department.  He needs polish, but the kid can flat get after it.

6' 6"/267 lbs.

[official bio]

DE Philip Alexander, Duke

He's the best Blue Devil, still recovering from a broken leg suffered last year, but expected to be ready by spring.  He's big, fast, and very versatile solid against the run, able to rush the QB, and did it against the toughest teams on Duke's schedule.

6' 4"/265 lbs.

[official bio]

DT Dusty Dvoracek, Oklahoma

He was MIA last year with a dismissal from the team, but he's back and committed to being one of the top interior linemen in the nation.  He had anger management issues, like that's a bad thing for a DT.

6' 3"/298 lbs.

[official bio]

DT Antwon Burton, Temple

A true NT prospect, which all of these new 3-4 teams will love.  He was out last year, with a broken foot, but promises to become a disruptive force in the middle of a bad Temple defense.

6' 3"/315 lbs.

[official bio]

LB Chris Moore, East Carolina

A one man wrecking machine on a horrible team.  If he played at Ohio State, he'd be a first round prospect.

6' 1"/228 lbs.

[official bio]

LB Terna Nande, Miami (OH)

He's an insane athlete and has to be seen to be believed.  He'll probably slip, because he's sort of a LB/SS 'tweener, but it doesn't matter.

6' 1"/230 lbs.

[official bio]

LB Spencer Toone, Utah

Toone's season will depend adapting to a new system.  He makes a great rover-type player on the weak side.  He has ideal size, he just needs to play better within the system, being more disciplined.

6' 2"/235 lbs.

[official bio]

CB Sammy Joseph, LSU

With Webster and Daniels gone, one starting spot is his, and he'll make the most of it.  A very good cover player, he'll benefit from not having to play as much press man as LSU corners did under Saban.

5' 11"/197 lbs.

[official bio]

CB Bernard "Josh" Lay, Pittsburgh

This kid has all the technique and measureables in the world, but his NFL future will depend on whether or not he can step up his tackling and physical play.

6' 2"/195 lbs.

[official bio]

S Derron Ware, Arizona State

Ware has great physical gifts, and a true FS mentality.  He could even play CB in the NFL.

6' 3"/230 lbs.

S Travis Williams, Illinois

Very versatile player, able to get up and hit and blitz  like a SS, but also drop and cover, as a FS.

6' 0"/190 lbs.

[official bio]

*junior

Mike Williams*― Texas, 6' 3"/240 lbs. (suspended from team)
