Solid prospect, who has shown the ability to make plays, not only in short and intermediate routes, but also as a deep threat, when he gets by defenders. Very good after the catch, being able to turn short routes into long gains. Great hands, and makes the most of his opportunities on a loaded USC team.
NEGATIVES
Doesn't have ideal size or speed, and some insist that his success if a product of having played on a team so loaded with stars; he's the guy who got left alone. Has a tendency to lose concentration, and either drops catchable balls, or works too hard to make easy catches, using more body than hands. Showed no ill effects of the broken leg from 2004, but it's still an injury concern.
FINAL WORD
Smith is sort of a mystery. He's been able to put up good numbers, but he's never been the player that many thought he would be, coming out of high school. It will be interesting to see this year, with a considerable drop in talent, and sharing catches with the superior player Dewayne Jarrett, will he be able to step his own game up, or will his draft stock take a hit. I suspect his numbers drop, and he'll need to count on a big off-season, to move up draft boards.
