For starters, Tye Hill has superior speed. He’s an
extremely quick athlete in every facet of his play
that could be put up against just about anyone. His
break on the ball is lethal to a play, even on the
occasion when he appears to have been beat; he’ll
come out of nowhere and bust up the play.
Excellent in man coverage, Hill can stick to his man
like glue. Unafraid of contact, Tye is a very
physical corner who actually excels in run support.
He’s always cognizant of where the ball is and
whether it’s on the ground or in the air, he’s
fantastic at getting to it. He has great footwork,
makes smooth hip adjustments and has excellent body
control. Despite being shorter than some corners,
his leaping ability makes up for it and then some.
Tye does a great job not only getting airborne, but
timing his leaps so it translates into making plays.
Negatives:
Although Tye can be a physical corner, he may have
problems with his size when it comes to the bigger
stronger receivers in the NFL. It’s not a lack of
ability, just the fact that he’s not very big.
Although his build is perfect, his height is not,
and that may well be his biggest weakness. Another
area that might need some attention is his hands.
He tends to run before he has the ball, or not look
the ball all the way in before taking off. Though
his man coverage is wonderful, he gets a little
turned around at times in zone coverage, but this is
where his speed tends to bail him out if he gets to
confused.
Overall:
What
Tye Hill lacks in size, he makes up for in heart. I
had an opportunity to speak with Tye before
departing from Mobile. He’s a very confident young
man, with no doubt about his own abilities. His
determination and drive has erased any doubts others
may have had in him time and again, and after
leaving such a strong impression with me and at
every opportunity as the draft approaches, he may
continue to exceed expectations. Players that give
you everything they have on every single play
generally do; so I suspect Hill will not only do
that, he’ll make sure you know he’s there.
Final Word:
CONFIDENCE
–
Tye needs to stay confident in his abilities and his
overall presence. After showing up so well at the
Senior Bowl, and again at the combine, he now needs
to show what he can really do against NFL
receivers. Tye was not the corner getting most of
the attention or discussed as a first rounder just a
short time ago, but that’s changed and all he’s done
is climb. He’s done a fantastic job of showcasing
his talents when the opportunity presented itself,
now all he has to do is go out and continue to
showcase those talents on Sunday afternoons.
